I just saw an excellent WWII movie, 'Hacksaw Ridge'. The movie centres on an American conscientious oblector who enlists in the U.S army to serve as a combat medic. This is based on the true story of Desmond Doss, played by Andrew Garfield. I am glad to see war depicted as something brutal & wholly unpleasant, as opposed to it being 'cool'. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Stallone in 'Rambo' but that's entertainment. The power of the human spirit is truly astounding. This is particularly poignant these days when far too many of us settle for madiocrity. It was directed by Mel Gibson, who, as many will remember, was villified for going on an anti-semitic rant 10 years ago. To those who hold on to that I say, goddamnit, it's been 10 years! We've all done things in our lives we regret. And the person who makes no mistakes, doesn't do diddly-squat! As the Buddha said: to completely avoid criticism"say nothing, do nothing, be nothing". I'll get off my high horse now. And, at the risk of repeating myself, if you have any interest in human potential, WWII, war in general, or the military go see Hacksaw Ridge!
